Woman in 50s fighting for life after brutal axe attack as man, 47, arrested
A woman in her 50s is fighting for her life after being battered in a terrifying axe attack.
A 47-year-old man, who is known to the victim, was arrested at the scene in Ilford, east London, on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police were called by the London Ambulance Service to a report of a woman attacked with an axe inside a residential address shortly after 2pm on April 9.
She was found seriously injured and taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition, the Metropolitan Police said.
The axe attack marks the second horrific incidence of violence against women in Ilford on the same day.
Just a few hours prior, a woman in her 80s was discovered not breathing in a bath at a property just 500m away.
She was later pronounced dead and a man, believed to be known to her, was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Met Police say Friday’s axe attack was primarily domestic in nature and that the man and woman are known to each other.
A number of suspects are believed to have left the address before officers arrived.
